PUBLIC STATEMENT OF LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH
RE: THE CRIMINAL ISSUES INVOLVING GEORGE BELL
Issued November 14, 2024
Liberty Baptist Church and its leadership are deeply saddened by the actions of former Pastor George Bell, who has been charged with multiple counts of sexual crimes against minors. George Bell was never involved in the ministry at Liberty Baptist Church, and none of these charges relate to anyone associated with our church. He has never been on the church campus and will not be allowed there in the future. Our church firmly believes that children should be safe in all settings, especially within our church, and we condemn any actions that violate this principle. If anyone has relevant information on this matter, please contact the Columbus Police Department immediately.
At Liberty Baptist Church, we uphold a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding child abuse or any form of sexual misconduct. We do not and will not conceal abuse. In alignment with Ohio state law, we report any suspicions of child abuse to the appropriate authorities. Our hiring process includes thorough interviews and background checks for all employees and volunteers, and our leadership has implemented child protection policies that adhere to nationally recognized best practices. We are fully committed to providing a transparent, safe, and accountable environment for our community.
There have also been public statements regarding Mrs. Cynthia Bell, George Bell's wife, and her alleged involvement in his actions. Currently, Cynthia Bell is separated from her former husband, and her divorce is pending in the courts. Law enforcement has confirmed that she was not involved in any way, and any claims suggesting otherwise are unfounded. Mrs. Cynthia Bell is a member of our church and will continue to attend services here.
Some in the community have publicly criticized our pastor and his wife for supporting Mrs. Bell. However, Scripture calls upon us to care for family, and as such, our pastor and his wife will continue to honor their commitment to care for Mrs. Bell, who is grieving and equally condemns her husband's actions. Liberty Baptist Church stands by their decision and support their commitment to do so.
Due to the gravity of this situation and in consultation with legal counsel, Liberty Baptist Church will not be making further comments at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and all those affected by George Bell’s actions.
